(ProsperNews.net) – Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, a 22-year-old illegal immigrant from Mauritania charged with terrorism and hate crimes, was discovered dead in his Cook County jail cell on Saturday. Authorities have ruled his death a suicide, stating that Abdallahi hanged himself.
Jail staff found Abdallahi unresponsive during a routine security check. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital shortly after being transported. Officials confirmed there were no signs of foul play in the incident.
Abdallahi’s arrest in October followed a series of violent attacks in Chicago’s West Rogers Park neighborhood. He was accused of shooting a Jewish man and later targeting police officers and paramedics in separate incidents. Witnesses reported hearing Abdallahi shout “Allahu Akbar” during the attacks. He faced 14 felony charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, terrorism, and hate crimes.
Evidence recovered from Abdallahi’s phone suggested that his actions were premeditated. Investigators found messages indicating that he sought to target Jewish individuals specifically. Security footage corroborated this evidence, showing Abdallahi pursuing first responders in a coordinated assault.
Abdallahi’s immigration status has added another layer of controversy to the case. He entered the United States illegally through the southern border in 2023 during the Biden administration. He was among more than 15,000 individuals from Mauritania who crossed the border that year. Mauritania, a majority-Muslim country in northwest Africa, has seen increased emigration due to ongoing political and economic instability.
