Illegal Immigrant Suspected of Murder Shortly After Release

(ProsperNews.net) – A tragic story has unfolded in Maryland, where an illegal immigrant, who had been released by border agents, allegedly killed his girlfriend just weeks after being freed.

Gerber Luis Sanchez-Centeno, 23, is now facing charges of first-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Dania Cruz-Mejia, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police. Cruz-Mejia’s family went to her home after they hadn’t heard from her for a while, and that’s when they made the horrible discovery. Around 4:20 p.m. on September 18, emergency workers arrived at the scene and tried to save her, but sadly, she was pronounced dead.

Sanchez-Centeno was arrested two days later, on September 20, and charged with her murder.

The story becomes even more concerning when we learn that Sanchez-Centeno had illegally entered the United States not long before this. After being caught by U.S. Border Patrol on June 2 near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, he was placed into a program called Alternatives to Detention, which included a GPS monitor to track him. However, by August 8, authorities had lost track of him after he removed the GPS device, according to Newsweek.

James Covington, a spokesman for Baltimore’s Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations, confirmed Sanchez-Centeno’s illegal status, describing him as a 23-year-old from El Salvador who entered the country unlawfully. Covington added that his department had filed an immigration detainer against Sanchez on September 23.

Meanwhile, the victim, Cruz-Mejia, had only been in the U.S. for five months. She was studying cosmetology and learning English, hoping to build a better future. Her teacher, Vivian Salazar, expressed deep sadness, recalling how excited Dania was about her education and learning English.

Cruz-Mejia’s sister, Maria, shared her grief, calling it the “saddest day” of her life when she found out what happened to her beloved sister, who was always positive, no matter the challenges.
