(ProsperNews.net) – A recent court filing claims that President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, accepted millions of dollars from a Romania oligarch in exchange for influence with American government agencies when his father was vice president during the Obama administration.
According to Special Counsel David Weiss in a court filing on Wednesday, Aug. 14, Hunter Biden accepted a payment of $3,101,258 from Gabriel Popoviciu of Romania. The Romanian national was purchasing “influence” over US government officials connected to then-Vice President Joe Biden as he served in the cabinet of former President Barack Obama, stopping short of claiming Hunter Biden “improperly coordinated” with that administration.
In 2023, Weiss did not indict Hunter Biden on violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and instead indicted him for tax violations, which many Republicans believe wasn’t good enough to serve justice. Prosecutors claim the deal with Gabriel Popoviciu was structured in such a way as to avoid explicit FARA violations because the president’s son was worried about the “political ramifications.”
On Wednesday, Aug. 7, GOP Rep. James Comer of the House Oversight Committee posted about the findings and said “bank records don’t lie.” He said the records show that the media took “marching orders from the Biden White House” and ignored “public corruption.”
Hunter Biden could still face charges for FARA violations after the plea deal that would have given him immunity fell apart after being scrutinized by the court. After the deal crumbled, Weiss filed separate tax and gun charges in California and Delaware, for which Hunter Biden will stand trial this month.
The latest court filing says that the Justice Department (DOJ) will introduce new evidence at trial related to the deal with Popoviciu as well as other deals made with Burisma Holdings and the CEFC China Energy Co., from which Hunter Biden accepted millions of dollars as a private citizen when his father was vice president. The evidence will allegedly demonstrate that Hunter Biden “performed almost no work” for the payments and does not show he “performed lobbying activity.”
If convicted, the president’s son could face up to 17 years behind bars. The sentencing for his gun case is scheduled for November. Overall, Hunter Biden is contending with three convictions related to gun violations and nine related to taxes and is potentially facing a total of 42 years in prison.
