(ProsperNews.net) – GOP lawmakers in the House of Representatives are working to rescind the January 6 Committee subpoenas issued to Steve Bannon, Mark Meadows, Peter Navarro, and Dan Scavino. Under Republican proposals, contempt of Congress resolutions against the men would also be withdrawn.
Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, and Rep. Eric Burlison of Missouri introduced a joint resolution to rescind the subpoenas, with Rep. Burlison describing them as a “political weapon.” Rep. Massie called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to bring the issue to the House floor as soon as possible.
The resolution describes the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack as “illegitimate” and its decisions as biased and partisan. Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene of Georgia has backed the motion, saying former Speaker Nancy Pelosi violated House rules when she refused to accept Kevin McCarthy’s choices for the panel. Pelosi vetoed the inclusion of GOP Reps. Jim Jordan and Jim Banks, saying it was necessary to protect the investigation’s integrity. However, fierce Trump critic Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming won Pelosi’s blessing.
Ms. Pelosi won the power to select the Committee’s members through a resolution passed through the House with the support of two Republicans. GOP critics said her refusal of Jordan and Banks was proof of her bias and argued that the panel’s anti-Trump leanings rendered it and its decisions null and void.
Long-term Trump ally Steve Bannon was convicted on contempt charges in 2022 after defying a Committee subpoena. An appeal court upheld the conviction, and Bannon is due to start a prison term in July. Bannon had refused to supply documents or a deposition to the Committee and was sentenced to four months in jail. He later told reporters the sentence would not “shut him up” and insisted that the Committee was focused on closing down the MAGA movement and silencing grassroots conservatives.
Mr. Bannon’s lawyer said his client should not be jailed until the Supreme Court has heard his case.
