(ProsperNews.net) – Former Afghan Army Lt. Gen. Sami Sadat has voiced strong concerns about Afghanistan becoming a “crucible of terrorism” following the U.S. military’s withdrawal and the Taliban’s swift takeover in 2021. Sadat claims that the Taliban’s control has turned Afghanistan into a safe haven for al Qaeda and other extremist groups. His statement echoes findings in a recent report from Texas Rep. Mike McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which critically examined the chaotic U.S. withdrawal.
The report highlights serious mismanagement during the pullout, drawing parallels to President Joe Biden’s past urgencies for withdrawal, including from Vietnam. It challenges Biden’s claims that his administration was bound by former President Trump’s Doha agreement with the Taliban, which had set a withdrawal deadline for U.S. troops. According to the report, top military leaders had advised that the Taliban had violated key conditions of the agreement, and thus, the U.S. was not obligated to stick to the withdrawal timeline.
The report points to a lack of preparation, especially by the State Department, in handling the evacuation of Americans and allies. Despite clear warnings, the department reportedly failed to shrink the embassy in Kabul and rejected military concerns. One particularly devastating consequence was the attack at Abbey Gate, where multiple terror threats had been tracked but went unaddressed, resulting in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and over 150 Afghans.
Long-term consequences of the withdrawal include billions of dollars in U.S. military equipment left behind and reports that the Taliban is using American biometric devices to hunt down former Afghan allies. The report underscores the broader implications for U.S. foreign policy and national security, particularly in allowing Afghanistan to become a breeding ground for terrorism under the Taliban’s control.
