(ProsperNews.net) – An Indiana man shot a burglar at his home and then caught a second one after returning from a police station the same day. Alfred Burdine told local reporters that he found an alleged burglar on his property while leaving for work at 4.30 am. He said he walked up to the intruder and drew his gun, and at that point, the burglar appeared to reach into his pocket, prompting Mr. Burdine to shoot him in the leg.
He subsequently told police he feared for his life and defended himself. When he got home from the police station, he was stunned to find yet another trespasser on his property. Police apprehended the second intruder, and Burdine said crime was out of control in his area. “I think we need to increase patrols because there are a lot of people with drug problems, and there is no treatment for them,” he said.
One of the alleged burglars, 30-year-old Alfie Steadman, had methamphetamine in his possession at the time, and police charged him with two felony counts of possession and level 5 felony burglary.
According to the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, 13% of Indiana residents admit to using illicit drugs, with the majority starting their narcotics journey between 13 and 18 years old. Addictions develop in many cases, and there is a direct link to crime, with burglary occurring at high rates.
Defense laws in the Hoosier State are contained within the Indiana Code, which permits reasonable force for self-protection or if another person is in imminent danger. Deadly force is permissible and justified if a person believes it is necessary to prevent harm to themselves or others. Unlike in some states, Indiana law does not include a duty to retreat – meaning that a person cannot use deadly force if they can escape the situation.
The duty to retreat applies in Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.
