(ProsperNews.net) – In Houston, Texas, a homeowner fatally shot an alleged intruder armed with a shovel late Tuesday night in what authorities are investigating as a case of self-defense. The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Woodoak Drive, near Gulf Bank Road.
According to ABC 13, the 27-year-old suspect reportedly grabbed a shovel and began attempting to break into the home by smashing a window. As the situation escalated, the homeowner, who was inside the residence, retrieved a firearm to confront the intruder. The homeowner then fired multiple shots, striking the alleged intruder several times.
Houston police reported that after being shot, the suspect collapsed and was later transported to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save his life, the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities are still piecing together the details of the incident, but early reports suggest that the intruder may have been involved in other criminal activity leading up to the fatal encounter. FOX 26 Houston noted that before arriving at the Woodoak Drive residence, the suspect had allegedly caused damage to at least two other homes in the neighborhood. At this stage, police have not charged the homeowner, with investigators pointing to Texas’ robust self-defense laws, particularly those under the “Castle Doctrine.” This legal doctrine, upheld in many states, allows individuals to use deadly force in defense of their home without the duty to retreat if they believe their life is in immediate danger.
