(ProsperNews.net) – The former Republican Governor of Maryland, Larry Hogan, has lashed out at GOP Presidential candidates for supporting Donald Trump. He specifically criticized those contenders who said they would support Trump’s nomination even if he is convicted of criminal charges. During the first GOP primary debate in Milwaukee, almost all candidates – except Asa Hutchinson and Chris Christie – raised their hands when asked if they would give Trump their backing if he were a convicted offender.
“He’s innocent until proven guilty. There’s no question there’s been some overzealous prosecution, I understand all the concerns. But if he’s found guilty of felonies, in most states, you can’t even vote or serve on a jury,” Hogan said.
The former Governor said a week earlier that he was embarrassed and disgusted by the candidates’ replies and called it the low point of the debate. Hogan said it was beyond comprehension that Republicans would be willing to put a felon in the White House when they are supposed to be the party of law and order.
Asa Hutchinson and Chris Christie were the only contenders to dissent from the prevailing view. Mr. Christie said American society, specifically politicians, is “normalizing” President Trump’s “conduct.” He added that Mr. Trump’s behavior is “beneath” the office of US President.
Ex-Arkansas Governor Hutchinson argues that the Constitution does not allow Trump to regain the White House as he is expelled from standing under the 14th Amendment. The Amendment bars anyone engaged in “insurrection” from occupying the Oval Office. Some legal experts contend however that anti-Trump commentators misunderstand the Constitutional Amendment, and that it was written after the Civil War to ensure that Confederate military commanders could not take charge of the United States.
Polling conducted from August 26 to 29 shows that Donald Trump is keeping a firm hold on his commanding lead. An Economist survey placed him far out in front with 56% – trailed by second-place Ron DeSantis on just 16%.
