(ProsperNews.net) – President Biden is to ask Congress to authorize another aid package for Ukraine that will cost the American taxpayer more than $10 billion. Department of Defense officials are putting together a package for lawmakers to consider when Congress returns from recess. The proposals will likely cause friction on Capitol Hill as Republicans have already expressed disquiet about the amount of cash the US is giving away.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has previously said there would be no “blank check” for Kyiv’s war effort and that aid packages cannot be tagged onto other pieces of legislation to avoid proper debate and scrutiny.
Furthermore, growing numbers of Americans are becoming weary of the war. A CNN poll conducted in early August revealed that 55% do not want Congress to give any more money to Ukraine. Similarly, 51% said the United States has already done enough. The figures in August mark a distinct decline in support for Ukraine among Americans – in February 2022, 62% said they approved of greater US assistance.
The August poll also found that 53% do not approve of how the President is handling the conflict, while 56% believe his relationship with Russia is mismanaged. A further 56% say Biden needs to do better in dealing with China.
So far, America has given more than $110 billion to Ukraine – significantly more than Russia’s entire annual defense budget. It is also more than the United States has spent on its own border, and more than the yearly budget of many individual states.
GOP Presidential nomination frontrunner Donald Trump lashed out at Biden in July, saying his funding of Ukraine was dragging the world toward a global conflict. Trump called on the President to work to end the war rather than fuel it. The former President’s remarks came as Biden announced he would send cluster bombs to Kyiv. “These unexploded cluster munitions will be killing and maiming innocent Ukrainian men, women, and children for decades to come,” Trump said.
