(ProsperNews.net) – Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was reportedly killed during an explosion in a residence in Tehran, Iran on July 31. Three Iranians were also said to have been killed in the attack. It’s unclear what kind of weapon was used in the strike.
Haniyeh visited the area to attend the inauguration of the new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. He also had a meeting with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as with the leaders of other Iranian-backed militias like the Yemeni Houthis and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
The death was confirmed by Hamas and Iran’s official state media. Iranian officials called the incident an attack without elaboration. Hamas accused Israel of assassinating its leader.
The news followed Israel’s announcement hours prior that it had killed Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr, who was reportedly responsible for ongoing rocket attacks against Israeli territory. Shukr was also blamed for a 1983 attack on a barracks for U.S. Marines in Beirut.
Israel also reportedly killed Haniyeh’s three sons during an attack in Gaza earlier this year.
Khamenei has called for attacks against Israel in response to the bombing. The order was issued shortly after Haniyeh’s death was announced. Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack nor denied its involvement. Israel has no qualms killing foreign dignitaries, however.
A few months ago, Israel bombed an Iranian embassy in Syria which resulted in the deaths of seven Iranians. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad called the attack a terrorist action in comments to the corporate press.
Iran launched an ineffectual drone and missile strike in response, and it’s possible something similar occurs in the near future.
Despite efforts by the Biden/Harris administration to rein in Israeli military activity, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems determined to continue to escalate the war to include targeting its neighbors in the region. He said that Israel will respond with extreme prejudice to any Iranian strike that occurs in response.
