Graduates Walk Out on Biden During Ceremony

(ProsperNews.net) – College graduates turned their backs during President Biden’s address at a Georgia college. Former students at the historically black Morehouse College in Atlanta either turned away from the President or left their room when he spoke. One staff member joined them. The students are reportedly angry at the Biden administration’s approach to the Middle East conflict.

During his speech, Valedictorian DeAngelo Jeremiah Fletcher said the federal government must help secure an immediate ceasefire, which President Biden applauded. In follow-up remarks, Biden assured students that he heard their protests but added that the conflict is one of the world’s most complicated and frustrating situations. “I know it breaks your heart. It breaks mine as well,” he said.

Commentators suggest that Biden is increasingly cautious about his position on the Israel-Hamas conflict as he seeks to win back non-white and young voters, who are reportedly withdrawing their support by significant percentages. During his speech at Morehouse, the President also referred to the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020 and the death of George Floyd in police custody that preceded them.

Biden said instances like Floyd’s death cause black Americans to question whether the democratic system works for them. “If Black men are being killed in the street. What is democracy?” the President asked.

With just months until the Presidential election, President Biden warned the Atlanta graduates to beware of Donald Trump and his MAGA movement, which he said does not include black men in its vision for the United States. “They don’t see you in the future of America, but they’re wrong,” Biden said.

While black voters remain primarily aligned with the Democrats, polling since 2020 does indicate a shift in the Republican candidate’s direction. According to Pew polling in May 2024, 83% of black voters overwhelmingly identify with Democrats. However, 77% said they would not vote for Joe Biden in November, with 18% backing Trump. For voters aged 18 to 49, the percentage supporting Trump rises to 29%.
