(ProsperNews.net) – A Republican Representative has said Kevin McCarthy should return to the Speaker’s chair in the wake of the Middle East crisis sparked by the invasion of Israel by Hamas on October 7. Rep. John Duarte from California praised McCarthy as a true friend of Israel and a safe pair of hands to lead the House in a time of crisis. “We have one of our strongest allies in the world under attack, and we are dilly-dallying around with a leadership struggle in the House that should never have occurred,” he said.
McCarthy made history recently when he became the first House Speaker ever to be ousted from the post. Floridian GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz led the charge against him following his decision to present legislation to the House, aimed at preventing a government shutdown, for which he relied upon Democrat support while ninety Republicans dissented.
Following the vote for his removal, during which nine Republicans voted with the Democrats, McCarthy ruled out a return, but more recently, he softened his stance and indicated a willingness to take up the gavel once again. “I’m going to allow the conference to do their work,” McCarthy told reporters as the GOP appears unable to firmly back another candidate for the role.
A contender will need at least 218 votes to become Speaker, and speculation suggests this will be challenging. House Oversight Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has put himself forward, along with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise. Georgia firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene has even suggested that former President Donald Trump should put his name forward. Speaking to reporters, Trump did not rule it out.
Kevin McCarthy has called for the destruction of the terror group Hamas and swift and robust US aid to Israel. He called on Congress not to engage in pettiness when an American ally faces such a severe crisis. “We need to be strong, we need to be united,” he said.
