‘Glory’ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Actor André Braugher Dead at 61

(ProsperNews.net) – The actor André Braugher, best known for his role in the Civil War movie “Glory,” has died at the age of 61. The Oscar-nominated film starred Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Broderick and is considered the best Civil War film of its era. In it, Mr. Braugher played Thomas Searles, a free and educated black man from the north who joined the first black regiment in the Union Army. He would later enjoy a successful television career, with roles in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.”

In 1998, Braugher won an Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton on the NBC drama “Homicide: Life on the Street.” He took home his second Emmy in 2006 for his role as Nick Atwater in the mini-series “Thief.”

Born in Chicago in 1962, Braugher grew up in the city’s West Side, where he earned a high school scholarship to Stanford University. Initially intending to study engineering, he fell in love with acting at college and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in theater in 1984.

News of his death, which followed a short illness, was met with warm tributes from co-stars and colleagues who described Mr. Braugher as a joy to work with. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” writer Jeff Topolski shared memories about the actor on Twitter and said his death was devastating. “It was such a joy and an honor to watch Andre Braugher work. So talented, so kind, so fun. Can’t believe it,” he wrote.

In one post, Topolski described how Braugher “flew back home to the East Coast every single weekend to be with his family.” He added, “He was clearly committed to his craft, but he was even more committed to his loved ones.”

Mr. Braugher is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, whom he married in 1991, and his three sons, Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley. The family lives in New Jersey.
