(ProsperNews.net) – A movie about George Floyd’s life is under production in Hollywood. The film Daddy Changed the World is in its early stages with a production team that includes Floyd’s daughter, Gianna Floyd, and her mother, Roxie Washington. Gregory R. Anderson is to pen the screenplay, but a director has not yet been named.
Roxie Washington said the movie would “humanize” Floyd and portray him as “jovial and loving,” but producers stated that it would not paint him as a saint but an ordinary man with flaws whose family was catapulted into the center of a global movement. Washington hopes the movie will “reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.”
Democrats introduced the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in 2021, a year after Floyd’s death sparked protests and rioting across the world. The legislation sought to make police officer prosecutions easier and prohibit some controversial practices – including the tactics used by officer Derek Chauvin, which caused Floyd’s death.
Chauvin was sent to jail for 20 years for kneeling on Floyd’s neck in Minneapolis after detaining him for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 note at a convenience store. The bill passed through the House of Representatives while under Democrat control but stalled in the Senate.
Analysts suggested a significant sticking point for lawmakers was the “qualified immunity” protecting officers from civil litigation. Republicans say ending the immunity would have a catastrophic impact on police recruitment levels nationwide.
George Floyd, who had a lengthy criminal record, died in police detention in Minneapolis in 2020 after Chauvin held his knee on his neck for around nine minutes. Growing up in Texas, Floyd had several run-ins with the law, and between 1997 and 2005, police arrested him on charges including theft, drug possession, and aggravated robbery. He was jailed for five years for threatening a pregnant woman with a gun. Judicial rulings did not permit the inclusion of Floyd’s record in the Derek Chauvin murder trial.
