(ProsperNews.net) – Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who is married to actor George Clooney, was one of the attorneys involved in drafting arrest warrants for Israel’s leaders. The International Criminal Court (ICC), based in the Netherlands, issued warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas officials, sparking outrage in the Jewish state.
Chief ICC prosecutor Karim Khan thanked Amal Clooney for her help drafting the documents, describing her as a “special adviser.” Clooney later told reporters that she had formed part of an eight-person panel that met in January, at Khan’s request, to review possible criminal acts committed in the conflict that broke out after a Hamas terror attack on Israeli civilians last October.
Mr. Netanyahu was furious about the ICC decision and described it as the “new antisemitism” that had moved from college campuses to the international court. The Israeli leader said he “rejects with disgust” any comparison between the designated terrorist group Hamas and the Israeli Defense Force and its legitimate military response to a vicious attack.
He asked “with what audacity” the ICC can compare “democratic Israel and the mass murderers of Hamas.”
Several European leaders appeared to back the ICC decision, with Belgium’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hadja Lahbib, saying any crimes in Gaza must be prosecuted, regardless of the perpetrator. France supported the criminal court and said it had warned Israel to adhere to international law.
Britain’s leader Rishi Sunak, however, said issuing arrest warrants against Netanyahu and others did nothing to “help reach a pause in the fighting.” Sunak also agreed that comparing Hamas with Israel was illegitimate and “incomprehensible.”
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer spoke out in agreement with Mr. Sunak.
President Biden called the ICC’s actions “outrageous.” He said there was no comparison between Israel and Hamas, adding, “We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security.” The President also made it clear that Israel’s actions in Gaza do not amount to “genocide.”
