(ProsperNews) – In an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity this week, California Governor Gavin Newsom discussed a range of issues, including his state’s pandemic response, Senator Dianne Feinstein’s health, and, of course, Donald Trump’s indictment.
When discussing the DOJ’s indicting Trump on 37 counts, including 31 counts of “Willful Retention of National Defense Information” and 6 additional counts, including obstruction and making false statements, Newsom said he was saddened by the news “as an American.”
When asked about his relationship with the former president, Newsom said that he and Trump cooperated during the COVID pandemic, adding that the two “had an incredible relationship.”
Newsom said Trump didn’t play politics with California during the pandemic. He added that some of his Democrat colleagues often criticized him for refusing to attack Trump.
When Hannity asked him about the photos of him and a group of friends dining maskless at the upscale Napa restaurant French Laundry in November 2020, the California Democrat conceded that it had been a “terrible mistake.”
Newsom noted that violating his mask mandate wasn’t “illegal” but “it was wrong” because he “violated the spirit of what I was preaching.”
When discussing 89-year-old Senator Dianne Feinstein’s health, Newsom insisted that if he has to appoint a replacement to finish out Feinstein’s current term, he would choose a black woman.
When Hannity asked why Newsom would limit his choice to a black woman rather than basing his appointment on merit, the California governor bemoaned the loss of Kamala Harris as a black woman in the Senate, saying that Kamala leaving the Senate meant California “lost that representation” for blacks, which he described as “historic.”
Newsom noted that he replaced Kamala with another “historic” choice, “the first Latino in California’s history.” He explained that he chose Alex Padilla to replace Harris because he thought it was important to choose Padilla since Latinos make up 39 percent of the state’s population.
