(ProsperNews.net) – An ex-FBI informer has been re-arrested for allegedly lying about the relationship between the Biden family and the Ukrainian gas company, Burisma. It was his second arrest in days and was ordered by a judge who said Alexander Smirnov was a flight risk. Agents first detained Smirnov in Las Vegas a week earlier on charges of making false statements and creating fictitious records, but a Nevada judge subsequently released him on bail.
Prosecutors believe Mr. Smirnov, who holds dual US and Israeli citizenship, lied when he claimed Joe Biden and his son Hunter received $5 million each from Burisma in 2015, an accusation that is central to the GOP impeachment case against the President on Capitol Hill.
When ruling in favor of the DOJ and agreeing to hold Smirnov in detention until his trial, US District Judge Otis Wright said, “There is nothing garden variety about this case.”
Special Counsel David Weiss, who is prosecuting Mr. Smirnov, argues in court filings that Smirnov continues to disseminate “misinformation” that could impact this year’s Presidential election and that he is financed by Russian intelligence – something that the suspect admitted.
Smirnov’s claims came to light last July when Republican Senator Chuck Grassley published his allegation that the Bidens received substantial payments from Burisma while Joe Biden was Vice President.
The impact of Smirnov’s indictment on the House Oversight Committee investigation into the President’s past conduct could be devastating, according to some Democrats. Rep. Jamie Raskin, who sits on the Oversight Committee, said, “Smirnov was the foundation of the whole thing,” and his indictment could “destroy the entire case.”
Republicans, similarly, are losing faith in their chances of impeaching the President. Some reports cite anonymous sources saying the impeachment won’t make it to the House floor, and GOP Congressmembers will likely argue to drop it. Nebraska Republican Representative Don Bacon publicly commented that he felt the inquiry was “helpful,” but it had discovered no evidence that the President broke the law.
