(ProsperNews.net) – Former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi has filed to contest his old Congressional seat, currently occupied by disgraced Republican George Santos. Mr. Suozzi will formally launch his campaign for the 3rd Congressional District in November, saying Congress needs “more common sense and compassion and less chaos and senseless fighting.”
Since entering the House of Representatives, Santos has been under fire after admitting he lied during his election campaign. He has faced several investigations after claiming that he worked for Goldman Sachs, graduated from Baruch College, and was Jewish. In reality, he never worked for that or any bank, had never graduated from college, and comes from South American Catholic descent.
During the course of investigations, bizarre stories emerged, including that he’d stolen from previous roommates, been convicted of offenses in Brazil, and involved himself in political activism under a different name.
His problems hit the headlines again on October 10 when federal prosecutors charged him with ten new offenses, bringing his tally to 23. The US District Court for the Eastern District of New York announced the ten new charges, including conspiracy to commit offenses through creating materially false statements to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, and wire fraud.
Santos has previously been indicted on charges including money laundering, theft of public funds, and making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.
Several Democrats have already entered the race to replace Mr. Santos next year, including State Senator Anna Kaplan, law professor Will Murphy, former county legislator Josh Lafazan, and co-founder of the Democratic donor network Next 50 Zak Malamed.
Afghanistan war vet Kellen Curry has thrown his hat into the ring for the Republicans. Mr. Curry announced his candidacy in April, saying he wants to fix the “broken system” in Washington, DC, and promising to provide “next-generation leadership” to solve America’s many complex problems and “restore honesty and integrity” in Congress.
