(ProsperNews.net) – After it was revealed that Democratic candidate Susanna Gibson had produced explicit photos and videos with her husband, voters in Virginia’s House of Delegates race paid close attention to the contest between Republican David Owen and Democratic candidate Gibson.
After all 100 seats in the House of Delegates were redistricted to conform with the 2020 Census, Gibson faced up against Owen in one of the state’s most competitive districts.
In September 2022, after formally entering the contest, Gibson, a 40-year-old mother of two, uploaded more than a dozen archival recordings to an adults-only website. After news outlets learned in September that Gibson had engaged in live-streamed adult content, including soliciting payments from viewers in exchange for particular actions, many political scientists wrote off her chances, and they were right.
The District 57 contest was destined to be a close and difficult one to win. The race, which had its roots in Henrico County, was one of several close contests around Virginia, especially in Richmond. The results of Tuesday’s elections showed that abortion restrictions were widely rejected across the country. Voters in Ohio approved a referendum to ensure protections in the state constitution, and Democrats in Virginia who had united around supporting access held the Senate and flipped the House of Delegates to their control.
A reproductive rights organization, ReproRising, endorsed Gibson over her Democratic competitor in the June primary and continued to support her throughout her campaign.
Gibson’s campaign could have won had she focused solely on protecting access to abortion, one of the main reasons she sought to run.
An alleged GOP operative gave the Washington Post access to adult content videos of Gibson and her husband. Gibson blamed the Republican Party’s “dirty politics” for the exposure of her inappropriate behavior.
After the video of the political hopeful performing lewd acts in exchange for monetary donations came out in September. Gibson issued a statement in which she said the discovery of the footage “won’t scare me, and it won’t quiet me.”
She is not scared or quiet, but she is defeated.
