(ProsperNews.net) – Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chairman Sean Cooksey has said the Democratic party must “return or refund” donations to Joe Biden’s Presidential election campaign. However, Mr. Cooksey wrote on Twitter that funds can be “redesignated” or “reattributed” as appropriate.
The matter is governed by the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), which also contains the rules for the redesignation of funds. The regulations state that an authorized political committee may request, in writing, that the contributor allow the funds to be redesignated to another campaign, subject to further complex constraints.
Given the unusual nature of the unfolding situation, experts appear divided on whether the funds can be transferred. Some people have argued that Harris is entitled to the funds because her name already appears on FEC filings as President Biden’s running mate. During a media interview, however, Mr. Cooksey confessed that the matter is complex and does not immediately know the answer. “I think it’s going to have to go through a process through the FEC,” he said.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has filed a complaint with the election commission arguing that the funds should not be rerouted to the Vice President. The complaint states that Vice President Harris is attempting to “perpetrate a $91.5 million dollar heist” and a “brazen money grab.”
Harris campaign spokesperson Charles Kretchmer Lutvak denounced Trump’s efforts and dismissed them as “jealousy.” He added that Republicans would distract themselves with these measures while Democrats are busy ensuring Ms. Harris’s victory in November. Recent reports indicate that Harris may not need Biden’s funds as her campaign breaks fundraising records. The Vice President received over $100 million in the first 36 hours, with 62% coming from first-time donors. Wealthy Democrat backers, who withdrew support after President Biden’s poor performance against Trump in Atlanta, have since re-engaged and resumed their funding.
Experts warn that an FEC investigation or response to Trump’s claims will likely drag on long after the election is over.
