EMT Attack Victim’s Mother Slams New York’s Crime Policies

(ProsperNews.net) – Last Monday, the man accused of stabbing a paramedic inside an ambulance in New York City in July was indicted on charges of assault and attempted murder, WABC reported.

Rudy Garcia, 48, who was picked up by ambulance on the evening of July 19 after a call about a cardiac arrest, allegedly stabbed 25-year-old EMT Julia Fatum multiple times as they were headed to Mount Sinai West in midtown Manhattan.

During Garcia’s arraignment last Monday, prosecutors said the suspect told police that he thought he was being kidnapped. Garcia claimed that he stabbed Fatum with a large kitchen knife he hid in his boot.

According to the indictment, when Fatum asked him to stop after he tossed a gum wrapper at him, Garcia pulled the knife from his boot and stabbed her six times — once in the abdomen, four times in her left thigh, and once in her left forearm.

Garcia pleaded not guilty to the charges and the judge kept his bail at $500,000. He is being held at Rikers Island.

In an interview with Fox News last Wednesday, Julia Fatum’s mother Cara Fatum-Grant said despite her daughter’s injuries, she is “determined” to get “back to life before the attack.”

According to Fatum-Grant, her daughter will be unable to return to work “any time soon” as she still has no function in her left arm and hand and continues to have difficulty walking.

Fatum-Grant blasted New York over how many times Rudy Garcia was arrested and released before he attacked her daughter, telling Fox that that state has failed its citizens. She suggested that New York State is more focused on protecting criminals.

Garcia’s prior convictions include two felonies for assaulting police, as well as at least two failures to appear and three misdemeanor charges.

Garcia was most recently arrested on June 10 after attempting to sneak onto a Brooklyn subway platform through the emergency exit. According to the NYPD, Garcia was charged with far evasion and criminal possession of a knife.
