Democrats Refuse to Certify Election If Trump Wins 2024

(ProsperNews.net) – Most Democrats oppose certifying the 2024 Presidential election if Trump is victorious. A March Rasmussen poll asked, “Do you support or oppose Democrats refusing to certify the election results if Trump wins?” Fifty-seven percent of Democrats said they support the notion. When the question was asked of the public more broadly, 35% said they support refusing to certify, and 55% oppose.

The result follows a warning by political analysts that senior Democrats in Congress may attempt to scupper Trump’s election victory and will use the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to do so. Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff of California, Eric Swalwell of California, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, James Clyburn of South Carolina, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies of New York have already stated that they will not commit to confirming the result in the event of a Trump win. Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California added her voice in February, saying she “might” join fellow Democrats in arguing that Trump is disqualified from office because the 14th Amendment bars those guilty of “insurrection.”

Dan McLaughlin of the National Review said if Democrats gain control of the House of Representatives in November, the prospect of a refusal to certify increases because only a simple majority of the House is required to throw the election result into chaos.

On the other side of the aisle, Trump-ally Elise Stefanik said she, too, is uncommitted to certifying the result if Biden wins. During an interview in January, she told Kristen Welker she would wait to see if “this is a legal and valid election.”

Stefanik noted Democrat attempts to remove Trump from the ballot and described these as the suppression of the American people.

The US Supreme Court overturned Colorado’s ruling that former President Trump is disqualified on 14th Amendment grounds, meaning similar attempts by other states were rendered invalid. However, the Court did not decide whether Trump was guilty of insurrection but determined that states do not have the right to ban candidates.
