Democrat Bill to Remove Statue of Liberty Over Immigration Law

(ProsperNews.net) – A Democrat in the House of Representatives presented a bill to remove the Statue of Liberty in response to Republican wishes to control migration. Floridian Rep. Maxwell Frost described the GOP’s Secure the Border Act as “bigoted” and said Republicans should be “honest” and take down the iconic statue if they are unwilling to concede to open borders.

Republicans posted a clip of Mr. Frost’s comments on Twitter, to near-universal condemnation. One poster wrote that the Statue of Liberty actually represents ordered immigration that was beneficial to the United States and that Ellis Island – the immigrant processing center near the statue – was used to keep people out of America if they were considered unfit.

Substack writer Jim Treacher pointed out that most of the Mayors in America complaining about mass migration are Democrats, including New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Frost’s objections were aimed at bill H.R.2, sponsored by Republican Florida Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart. Critics say the legislation will severely restrict asylum in the US and place more pressure on border communities.

As well as restarting construction on a southern border wall, H.R.2 would increase the number of Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents at the border and ban public funding for NGOs or charities that encourage illegal migration.

The bill passed through the GOP-controlled House of Representatives by 219 to 213 votes last May. Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and John Duarte of California voted against the legislation and joined with Democrats to condemn it. Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority leader, described H.R.2 proposals as “medieval,” while the White House said it fails to address the root causes of immigration.

In more recent negotiations between Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill, aimed at preventing a government shutdown in March, some GOP lawmakers said they would not support any funding package until it includes immigration reform that mirrors the H.R.2 bill. “We need to do as close to H.R.2 as possible,” said Rep. Nick LaLota of New York.
