(ProsperNews.net) – CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers sparked discussion on Friday with a suggestion that President Biden could replace Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with Vice President Kamala Harris. During a segment on CNN’s News Central, Sellers argued that Sotomayor should consider stepping down soon, allowing Biden and the current Democratic majority in the Senate to secure a liberal successor before the next presidential inauguration.
Host John Berman raised the concern many Democrats have voiced about President-elect Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Senate potentially shifting the court even further to the right. Sellers urged Biden to act swiftly, warning that waiting too long could lead to a situation similar to that of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose passing allowed Trump to appoint Justice Amy Coney Barrett and tilt the court to a 6-3 conservative majority.
“Justice Sotomayor has been a more than able justice,” Sellers said, adding that he didn’t want her tenure to stretch too long, risking a missed opportunity to secure a liberal justice. He encouraged Biden to take bold action over the next ten weeks, saying, “I don’t care about drawing outside the lines or what Republicans may think about it.” He then suggested Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential nominee, pointing to her legal background as a former attorney general of California and U.S. Senator.
A surprised Berman asked if Sellers was serious about Harris as a Supreme Court pick. Sellers confirmed, saying he wanted to “stir up everything” and “let Republicans go crazy” at the thought of Harris joining the high court.
Later, Sellers reiterated his stance on social media, posting on X that the current 6-3 conservative majority could shift to a 7-2 split if another liberal justice were replaced by a Trump appointee. Sellers noted that a confirmation could be completed in ten weeks, referencing the speed with which Barrett’s appointment was handled.
Despite the buzz around Sellers’ comments, Justice Sotomayor has not indicated any intention to retire, nor have other senior justices, including Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. While Democratic circles have speculated about possible Supreme Court retirements, there’s currently no indication of an imminent vacancy, and any such move would certainly ignite a heated debate over timing, strategy, and the role of the Supreme Court in a polarized era.
