City to Implement Illegal Immigrant Shelter Evictions

(ProsperNews.net) – Chicago is steaming ahead with plans to evict thousands of illegal immigrants from city shelters by the end of April. More than 2,000 migrants will face eviction in stages, with the first 35 scheduled for March 24 and 250 by the end of the month. Officials first enacted the policy last November, but this was delayed due to weather conditions. It will impact 11,000 people currently housed in the Windy City’s 23 homeless shelters.

The migrants will have few options, but many will return to the “landing zone” they occupied when they first arrived in the city. From there, they can request to return to the shelters from which they were evicted. Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson confirmed, however, that many will be granted extensions and allowed to remain in their current accommodations until June.

Chair of the City Council’s Committee on Immigrant and Refugee Rights Alderman Andre Vasquez has pleaded with Mayor Johnson to scrap the policy, saying nobody, regardless of where they were born, should face the “fear and instability” of homelessness, especially in a new and unfamiliar country.

Mr. Johnson said he had no choice and repeated his call for federal assistance, stating that the current situation was “unsustainable.” The mayor insisted “local municipalities are not designed to deal with an international global crisis.”

Vazquez acknowledged the lack of federal aid but continued to blame Johnson, saying the decision to increase the city’s homeless rate was his alone.

Chicago’s migrant crisis is exacerbated by its “sanctuary city” status, which Republicans have seized on, sending dozens of border crossers to the city. Last year, for example, Texas Governor Greg Abbott dispatched several migrant-filled planes and buses to Democrat-run cities, including New York, Denver, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Further problems were revealed last month when local media reported measles infections at a Windy City shelter. The Chicago Department of Public Health said there were 15 cases, making it the largest measles breakout since 2018.
