(ProsperNews.net) – Texan Rep. Chip Roy has introduced legislation to ensure that illegal immigrants cannot vote in federal elections. It is already illegal for them to do so, but Roy says there is no mechanism in place to ensure the law is obeyed. The Texas lawmaker argues that illegal migrants have access to social security and driving licenses, so the probability that they are voting unlawfully is high.
Roy pointed to often complex and inconsistent voting registration systems that vary from state to state and, in many instances, do not require people to prove they are US citizens. In Arizona, for example, there is a system to regulate local and state elections but a separate one for federal elections that does not question if voters are legally permitted to cast their ballots. Under his new bill, all states must ensure that only US citizens vote in elections to the US Senate, House of Representatives, and the White House.
The bill was passed through the House of Representatives with the support of five Democrats, but President Biden has said he would boycott it if it survives the Democrat-controlled Senate. House Speaker Mike Johnson described the legislation as among the most important in a lifetime, and it has Donald Trump’s vocal backing.
The five Democrats who helped pass the bill through the House were Reps. Henry Cuellar of Texas, Don Davis of North Carolina, Jared Golden from Maine, Vicente Gonzalez Jr. of Texas, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington.
Critics have accused Republicans of performing a legislative “stunt,” given it is already illegal for migrants to vote in federal ballots. President Biden is “strongly opposed,” and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the GOP hopes to prevent Americans from voting by introducing hurdles to registration.
On his Truth Social media account, Donald Trump urged Republican lawmakers to back the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or “go home.” Trump said Democrats want migrants to vote to keep them in office.
