(ProsperNews.net) – U.S. Capitol Police arrested Michael Hopkins, a staff member for Representative Joe Morelle (D-NY), on Thursday morning after ammunition was discovered in his bag during a security screening at the Cannon House Office Building. Hopkins, 38, now faces charges of unlawful possession of ammunition, including carrying a high-capacity magazine.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 a.m., when Capitol security officers flagged Hopkins’ bag during a routine scan. A hand search revealed four ammunition magazines and 11 rounds of ammunition. Hopkins reportedly told officers he had forgotten the ammunition was in the bag.
Capitol Police have charged Hopkins with unlawful possession of ammunition, a violation of strict regulations governing weapons and ammunition on Capitol grounds. The investigation into the matter remains ongoing as officials work to determine if any additional laws were violated.
Representative Joe Morelle’s office issued a statement affirming their cooperation with law enforcement. “We are committed to ensuring safety and security on Capitol grounds and will work with authorities as they investigate this matter,” the statement read.
Morelle, who represents New York’s 25th Congressional District, is a prominent Democratic lawmaker and the ranking member of the House Administration Committee. Known for advocating stricter gun laws, Morelle has also emphasized the importance of public safety in his district, which includes Rochester.
The arrest has raised questions about Capitol security protocols and the handling of prohibited items by congressional staff. As the investigation continues, Morelle’s office has emphasized its commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability.
