(ProsperNews.net) – A bride-to-be was shot and injured at a nightclub in Washington, DC, just weeks before her wedding. Identified only as Katie, the future bride told reporters she felt lucky to be alive after enjoying her bachelorette party with friends at Decades nightclub on Connecticut Avenue. She described hearing shots and running from the scene, but a bullet struck her in the leg as she fled. Katie vowed never to return to Washington, DC.
A Maryland man was later arrested and charged with shooting Katie and five others. Police said the suspect was Rennwel Mantock, a 29-year-old from Hyattsville who had been thrown out of the club earlier.
Police reports state that Mantock was dancing “on a lady” when security officials approached and asked him to leave. The files go on to claim that the security guards punched Mantock in the face as they were directing him outside, and this enraged him and prompted him to pull out a gun.
New details later revealed that security officers did not pat down attendees entering the venue. A joint report by the DC Metropolitan Police and the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Board cites surveillance footage on the evening showing the guards abandoning protocol and not checking bags or using metal detectors.
Prosecutors charged Rennwel Mantock with intent to kill, possession of unregistered ammunition, and possession of an unregistered firearm. He allegedly caused injury to four men and two women, five of whom required hospitalization.
Figures show that the nation’s capital is experiencing a rapid crime rise, with homicides up 35% in 2023. In January, lawmakers introduced proposals for tough new penalties for gun-related offenses to tackle what they described as a crime crisis.
The proposals give police officers more leeway, including with physical handling of suspects and body camera reviews. Police will also be permitted to declare 1,000 square feet areas as “drug-free zones,” and residents will be required to justify their presence there. Experts suggest the plans will attract fierce opposition.
