Board Member Resigns After Parolee’s Deadly Attack

(ProsperNews.net) – An Illinois parole board member has resigned after releasing a man who went on to murder an 11-year-old child. LeAnn Miller conducted the parole hearing of Crosetti Brand, who was jailed for 16 years for a home invasion and aggravated assault but released early under Miller’s recommendation. The following day, he allegedly murdered the child and injured his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

Brand left Stateville Correctional Center under electronic monitoring on March 12 but the next day, allegedly attacked former girlfriend, Laterria Smith, injuring her with a knife. When 11-year-old Jayden Perkins came to the woman’s aid, Brand allegedly turned the knife on him, stabbing him in the heart. The child then bled to death. Police charged Brand with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

The convict has a long history of violence, including against Laterria Smith, and had previously been paroled last October. During that period, despite an order of protection, he turned up at Smith’s home and threatened her, prompting his return to prison. Despite that incident, he was paroled again.

Ms. Smith remains in critical condition in hospital, but doctors say they expect her and her unborn child to recover.

LeAnn Miller joined the Illinois parole board in September 2021, having spent two decades working in the state’s Department of Corrections. Governor JB Pritzker stated that resigning was the right decision. “It is clear that evidence in this case was not given the careful consideration that victims of domestic violence deserve,” he said.

Pritzker added that a full review of parole procedures would take place, particularly concerning cases involving domestic violence.

Brand’s abuse and violence toward Smith date back to 2006, when she first ended their relationship. His first act of violence soon followed when he turned up at her house with a gun. This was followed by years of harassment, including throwing stones at her window and several phone calls. Two years after the breakup, he physically assaulted her after discovering she was dating someone new.
