(ProsperNews.net) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has come under fire from the Michigan Catholic Bishops’ Conference for a controversial video they call blasphemous. In the Instagram video, Whitmer is seen placing a Dorito chip on the extended tongue of a kneeling woman, mimicking the Catholic sacrament of Holy Communion. Whitmer, who was wearing a Harris-Walz campaign hat, performed the gesture in a way that closely resembles the sacred practice, sparking outrage among religious communities.
The Michigan Catholic Conference’s president, Paul A. Long, condemned the video, describing it as “offensive” and a clear mockery of Catholic rituals. “It’s not just distasteful or ‘strange,’” Long said, emphasizing that it mocks the core belief that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. He added that the skit reflects a broader trend of elected officials showing disrespect for religious beliefs and practices, whether intentional or not.
Long stressed that Michigan is a state with a diverse religious population, including Christians, Jews, and Muslims, who deserve respect. He called for a return to civility and consideration for people of faith, warning that the bar for how public figures treat religious communities is continually being lowered.
Catholic League President Bill Donohue also weighed in, calling Whitmer’s actions a display of “vintage anti-Catholic bigotry.” Donohue rejected the explanation from Whitmer’s team, which claimed the video was simply part of a social media trend where people feed each other. According to Donohue, these social media videos typically involve one person feeding another with a fork or spoon, often while sitting at a table. “None of them are kneeling. None of them are receiving food on the tongue,” he pointed out, making it clear that Whitmer’s video was an intentional mockery of Holy Communion.
Donohue concluded by stating that there is no way to interpret Whitmer’s actions other than as an insult to Catholics and their faith, and he dismissed attempts to justify the video as anything else.
