Biden’s Recent Education Aid Aims to Benefit Immigrants

(ProsperNews.net) – President Biden is pursuing an education policy that will allow illegal immigrants to attend college on the taxpayers’ dollar. According to conservative commentator Angela Morabito, writing for Fox News, Biden is using the TRIO program to provide free education to migrants, thereby encouraging yet more illegal immigration through financial incentives.

TRIO, a program created in the 1960s, was intended to help under-represented groups access higher education, but has morphed into a massive bureaucratic machine that distributes $1.2 billion annually to colleges and non-profit organizations, Morabito wrote.

“If the Biden administration gets its way, illegal immigrant students could avail themselves of tutoring, mentorship, financial aid counseling, and more paid for by TRIO grant money,” she continued.

TRIO financial aid is currently limited to citizens, permanent residents, and people legally in the US and on the path to citizenship. However, in recent developments, the Department of Education stated that the program will expand to all US high school students. Additionally, due to a Supreme Court decision in 1982, children of illegal immigrants can enrol in high school and thus qualify for TRIO assistance.

On January 12, the Department of Education announced the expansion of TRIO “to more students of disadvantaged backgrounds,” which it claims is in the spirit of the statute. In a statement, the department argued that TRIO and similar programs are not reaching “all students in the geographic areas” they were intended to serve.

Some educators, however, have spoken out against the move, saying the political climate is too fraught. D’Angelo Sands, executive director of college access and outreach at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, spoke against the plan at an advisory committee, warning of unintended political consequences. He and others argued that conservatives opposed to including illegal migrants in the program could cause it to be shut down altogether.

Geoffrey Garner, TRIO program director at Multnomah Education Service District in Oregon, agreed, saying, “This is a tough time to go to battle.”
