Biden Proposes Assault Weapons Ban Following Laken Riley’s Death

(ProsperNews.net) – President Biden is calling for an assault weapons ban in the wake of the murder of a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia. Laken Riley was murdered by an illegal immigrant in February as she went for her morning jog on the University of Georgia campus. Guns were not involved in her death, as she died from blunt force trauma to the head, but nonetheless, the President focused on gun control when addressing crime at a recent press conference.

Laken Riley’s murder is described as one of the most politicized American killings in recent years. As Republicans blame Biden’s lack of action on the southern border for the young nursing student’s death, the President pushed back, saying he had done more to reduce crime than any administration. Speaking in the White House dining room, Biden insisted that crime is down and stated that in 2023, murder, battery, assault, burglary, property crime, and theft “all dropped sharply.”

Political analysts say Riley’s death has become a flashpoint and helped to push illegal immigration to the top of America’s political concerns. A recent Gallup poll revealed that migration has trumped the economy and more Americans now consider it the most critical issue, and one that will inform their choice at the ballot box in November.

In the latest survey, 28% say immigration is their number one concern, up by 8% in a month. In second place is government, and the economy had dropped to third at 12%.

On his Truth Social media account, Donald Trump denounced the “savage monster” who allegedly killed Laken Riley and said, “We must rid ourselves of this ridiculous open border. Now.”

Mr. Trump visited the southern border in February, on the same day as President Biden, and both Presidential contenders promised to take action. Biden called on Trump to support Congressional proposals for extra border funding, while Trump said Biden did nothing throughout his Presidency but now seeks to shift blame to Republicans in an election year.
