(ProsperNews.net) – President Biden is promising to shut down the southern border if lawmakers pass legislation that will give him “emergency authority” to stop illegal migration. “For too long, we all know the border’s been broken, it’s long past time to fix it,” he said. The legislation is tied to an aid package for Ukraine and Israel and has been under negotiation between the White House and bipartisan lawmakers for some weeks.
The President said he would use the “emergency authority” contained within the legislation to shut the border “on day one,” but Republicans say the President has failed to apply immigration laws already available. “What is the point of negotiating new laws with an administration that will not enforce the laws already on the books?” asked House Speaker Mike Johnson.
As well as aid to Ukraine and Israel, the legislative proposals on the table include funds for an extra 1,300 Border Patrol agents, 375 immigration judges, 1,600 asylum officers, and 100 inspection machines to help stem the flow of the deadly drug Fentanyl into the United States.
Donald Trump, meanwhile, has urged the GOP to reject the bill as it will be propagandized by Democrats to place the blame on the open border firmly at the feet of Republicans. Biden’s own statements appear to confirm Mr. Trump’s view as he told the GOP that if it is serious about border control, it will pass the bill through Congress.
Trump’s intervention forced House Speaker Johnson to deny that the former President is “calling the shots” in the House of Representatives. Speaking to Kristen Welker on NBC’s Meet the Press, Mr. Johnson said he and his Congressional colleagues are in charge, and rejecting the bill is their decision.
Subsequently, Mr. Trump denied any influence but said lawmakers frequently asked his opinion. He said his rejection of the bill was not politically motivated, but he does not believe it is the solution to the migration crisis.
