(ProsperNews.net) – President Joe Biden’s administration has allowed over 9 million migrants into the United States, including roughly 6.5 million illegal and quasi-legal migrants, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The influx of migrants by early 2024 is nearly triple what it was in previous years, a number almost equal to the total migrant inflow of the last decade, according to data from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
This continued wave of new workers and consumers helps Biden’s administration claim job growth. However, many argue that the jobs being created largely benefit low-wage migrants rather than Americans seeking better-paying work. The Wall Street Journal noted that the actual number of migrants could be even higher, with estimates of at least two million having entered the country undetected since late 2020.
The current influx amounts to three migrants for every four babies born in the U.S. This mass migration is having a significant impact on wages, productivity, and economic opportunities for American workers. According to the report, nearly 23 percent of Biden’s migrants lack high school diplomas, a stark contrast to just 10 percent of the adult U.S. population. However, 36 percent of these new arrivals claim to have college degrees, slightly higher than the 35 percent of Americans who hold four-year degrees.
This migration is also hitting the U.S. job market hard, especially for American college graduates. For example, 2.5 percent of Biden’s migrant arrivals work in software development, while only 1 percent of Americans hold similar jobs. As a result, wages for American graduates have stagnated at levels seen in 2008.
The Wall Street Journal cited that this wave of migration is pressuring wages and job prospects for American workers. The report indicated that the flood of migrants is contributing to overall wage stagnation and decreased productivity, particularly in sectors like construction, where 6.5 percent of Biden’s migrants now work. In contrast, just 1 percent of Americans hold these jobs. Construction productivity has dropped since 1970, hurting the wealth and earnings of American workers.
Recent surveys and reports show how tough the job market has become for American graduates. For instance, a National Association of Colleges and Employers survey showed that companies were hiring fewer college graduates this year than last, especially in finance and real estate. Many new graduates, like Baily Hays from Pepperdine University, struggled for months to find employment in Biden’s “expanding” economy, reflecting the competitive job market that’s been partly influenced by the surge in foreign workers.
Despite the challenges for many American workers, polls indicate that Vice President Kamala Harris still holds significant support from college graduates in key battleground states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Harris holds a 21-point lead among white graduates in these states, according to a recent New York Times poll.
The impact of Biden’s immigration policies on the American economy, particularly on wages, productivity, and wealth, continues to stir debate, as critics point to the growing gap between job opportunities for migrants and native-born workers.
