Ben Gay, Ex-Browns Running Back, Dies at 44

(ProsperNews.net) – Former NFL running back Ben Gay has died in a car accident in Colorado in July; Gay was only 44 years old at the time of his death. Gay was known for playing a single season with the Cleveland Browns. His death occurred on July 29, according to corporate press accounts.

One former friend posted on social media that Gay “Rest easy” and called him “the original Spring legend.” The user spoke of going to middle and high school together and said “Ben was a beast” on the field. Gay was a towering 6’2” and 220 pounds.

Gay became a standout sensation during his time at Garden City Community College in Kansas. In 2005, he told writer John P. Lopez that he was getting ridiculous offers as a high schooler heading into college.

Gay ultimately switched schools after being removed from another school due to violating team practices and protocols. He played one preseason game with the Edmonton Eskimos, a Canadian Football team, before signing onto the Cleveland Browns.

His peak performance was during a game against the Ravens; Gay rushed 56 yards, had 18 carries, and one touchdown during the game.

Gay played in 16 games for the Browns in the 2001 season. The team won seven and lost nine of its games that year and finished in third place in the entire AFC North division.

Gay had a record of rushing 172 yards with 51 carries and had one touchdown on his record that year. The Browns opted to not renew his contract in the offseason and he signed on with the Indianapolis Colts, but wasn’t included in their final roster.

He tried to get back into football, but eventually ended up picking up welding as a tradeskill which he worked at until his death.

Gay leaves behind his wife, Margarita, and their three children: Brianna Morales, Julie Ortega, and Damian Ortega.
