(ProsperNews.net) – Officials in California are looking into what legal options are available to bar President Trump from the ballot in 2024. California Lieutenant Gov. Eleni Kounalakis wrote to Secretary of State Shirley Weber on December 20, referencing Colorado’s bar on the former President and asking if the Golden State should consider doing the same. “This decision is about honoring the rule of law in our country and protecting the fundamental pillars of our democracy,” Kounalakis wrote.
The Colorado Supreme Court ruled on December 20 that Donald Trump is barred from its ballot in 2024 for violation of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution – which bans candidates who have engaged in “insurrection or rebellion.” An earlier ruling found that Trump could not be disqualified because the 14th Amendment does not apply to Presidents, but the Supreme Court finding is the first in the US to determine that Trump should not be permitted to occupy the Oval Office.
The Colorado court, however, paused its own ruling to await a decision from the US Supreme Court, to which Trump said he would immediately appeal. The former President did not mention the ruling at a subsequent rally in Iowa, but on his Truth Social media account, he wrote, “What a shame for our country!!! A sad day for America!!”
The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington initiated the Colorado lawsuit, and its President, Noah Bookbinder, said it did so in the interests of American democracy, which Trump has undermined, and to protect the Constitution that “clearly states that those who violate their oath by attacking our democracy are barred from serving in government.”
Republicans have rallied around President Trump in the wake of the ruling, including his strongest critic among GOP White House candidates, Chris Christie. Mr. Christie said, “I do not believe Donald Trump should be prevented from being president of the United States by any court.” Nikki Haley echoed those sentiments, saying the decision should be left to the American people.
