(ProsperNews.net) – Americans have given their opinion on the ultimatum issued by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador during a recent media interview. Mr. López Obrador told Sharyn Alfonsi that unless America meets a list of his demands, he will unleash even more immigration at the southern border.
Mexican and US officials met last year to agree on a strategy for reducing migrant numbers, during which Mexico agreed to deport migrants from its border cities to ease pressure on the US. The Mexican President now says, however, that he will no longer conduct these deportations unless the US provides $20 billion to Latin American countries every year, lifts sanctions on Venezuela’s socialist government, and provides citizenship to “law-abiding Mexicans” living in America.
When questioned about what would happen if the US did not agree to these demands, Mr. López Obrador said, “The flow of migrants will continue.” When asked if his position amounts to blackmail, he replied, “We have to say things as they are.”
Fox News subsequently spoke to US citizens about the Mexican President’s comments and found mixed feelings. One Tennessee resident said he does not believe the US should adhere to Mexico’s demands because this will weaken America. However, another Nashville voter disagreed, saying the US spends millions elsewhere, so if it would help tackle the migration crisis, “why not?”
Others said America should not rely on foreign countries to control its own borders. “We can control it ourselves if we get off our butts and do it,” said one.
While the US-Mexican border is the entry point, figures show that most migrants are not Mexican, meaning migration to that country is exacerbating America’s crisis. Less than 30% of border crossers are Mexican citizens, and the rest comprises people from all over the world. Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras, and Columbia top the list, but increasingly, migrants from as far away as China are making their way into the US illegally.
