(ProsperNews.net) – A Mexican murder suspect allegedly confessed to his girlfriend that he had killed three people. Two Australians and one American went missing during a surfing trip in April, and Mexican authorities said they believed the men were murdered for their truck tires. Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and American Jack Carter Rhoad were camping near the city of Ensenada when it is believed they were victims of a carjacking that led to murder.
Chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez said she believed the thieves happened upon the vehicle and attempted to steal the tires but were confronted by the three campers. After killing the surfers, the alleged murderers dumped their bodies in a remote area, Ms. Ramírez said.
Authorities arrested Jesus Gerardo Garica Cota and his brother Cristian Alejandro Cota, as well as Cristian’s girlfriend, Ari Gisel, after a tip-off from the notorious Sinaloa Cartel. A cartel member told a reporter that they informed authorities of the brothers’ whereabouts to divert attention away from Sinaloa, who had initially been suspected of the killings. The anonymous source insisted the men were not members of the cartel. “They were low-level robbers acting alone,” he said.
In court, Ari Gisel testified that her boyfriend told her he had murdered the three men. Gisel claimed that after Garcia Cota told her, “I killed them,” he led her outside to show her that he had transferred the surfers’ truck tires onto his own vehicle.
The three victims’ bodies were discovered in a well and with gunshot wounds to the head. They were touring the Baja California coast, where rival cartels are active and violent incidents common. Some commentators have expressed doubt about the story told in court and believe the Cota brothers are scapegoats covering up cartel activity. An unnamed security source told US reporters that authorities do not want to deal with the cartels. He added that gang warfare implications could “devastate” tourism in the region.
