(ProsperNews.net) – A group of black Chicago residents recently held a rally warning that they oppose left-wing Mayor Brandon Johnson’s sanctuary city policies and are willing to switch their vote from Democrat to Republican. The protestors rallied in the city’s South Side, and speakers expressed disgust at the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on illegal migrants. The protest comes as Chicago City Council passed a law setting aside a further $150 million for border crossers in addition to the millions already spent.
Demands included the end of the Windy City’s “sanctuary” status and the removal of illegal immigrants. A sanctuary city is one where officials do not cooperate with federal immigration agencies and do not report unlawful migrants to those authorities.
A recent City Council meeting descended into chaos when furious residents filled the public gallery and held up placards demanding that local money be spent on local people. The meeting was called by 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale – whose constituency includes the South Side – to discuss a referendum on maintaining or abolishing Chicago’s sanctuary status. Mayor Johnson and his allies blocked the Alderman’s attempts.
Alderman Beale told gathered residents, “We’re spending a lot of money every single day. We’re up to $40 million a month.” The crowd responded with loud boos, and the meeting was adjourned to a later date. Ward Alderman Raymond Lopez said he had “never seen such a concerted effort to ignore the will of the people.”
On November 17, Mayor Johnson announced plans to exclude illegal migrants from homeless shelters after 60 days. It is unclear what happens to them after that point, but they will be expected to return to the end of the line and wait to be housed. Johnson said he plans to create pathways for resettlement, integrate newcomers, and build public infrastructure.
“We are addressing the anxiety and fear that people have, whether you are a taxpayer or whether you are someone who is seeking asylum,” he said.
