(ProsperNews.net) – British music star Adele attributed some of her success to being a “white woman” in music. She made the ‘woke’ remarks during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter when asked what advice she would give to young female singers. Having first stated that girls should “be themselves,” she added that a second crucial ingredient to her success is the color of her skin.
“More than anything, it’s just being yourself. That’s one of the reasons I’ve been so lucky with my career,” the singer said, before adding, “on top of the obvious of me being a white woman in music.” Critics have responded to the comments pointing out the high number of successful Black female singers, and the not-so-successful white ones.
Adele also said she believes people are afraid of her, mainly because she insists on doing things her own way. “I think there’s no room for negotiations when it comes to what I want to do and how I want to do it. And it’s always been like that,” she said.
The singer had a run-in with “woke” criticism in 2022 when she stirred controversy at the UK’s BRIT awards, which had changed its categories to be more “gender-inclusive,” by saying that she loved being a woman. Some accused her of transphobia, but she also won some online praise.
The awards show, Britain’s biggest, decided to scrap the Best Male and Best Female nominations and replace them with Artist of the Year. After winning the prize, Adele said, “I understand why this has changed, but I really love being a woman and a female artist.”
Two years ago, the Londoner was condemned for “cultural appropriation” when she posted a photo on Twitter showing her wearing Jamaican colors in celebration of her home city’s annual Notting Hill Carnival. Every year in London, the city’s Caribbean population hosts an enormous party and parade, largely focused in the upmarket Notting Hill area of West London.
