(ProsperNews.net) – Shannen Doherty, star of the 1990s TV hit “Beverly Hills 90210,” has died at age 53. Her publicist, Leslie Sloane, announced her death from cancer and described her as a “devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.” The statement said Doherty died surrounded by her family and her beloved dog.
The actress first spoke of her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015 and told fans that it had spread to her bones. In a candid interview, Doherty stated that she did not want to die, saying, “I’m not done.”
Two years later, the cancer had gone into remission but resurfaced in 2019. Several announcements over the proceeding years confirmed a diagnosis of metastatic stage 4 cancer in 2020, which had spread to the brain by 2023. Following the later diagnosis, Ms. Doherty took to Instagram and recorded an emotional message saying she was going through the “scariest” part of her illness. She encouraged people, however, not to consider her fragile or incapable and said she had more to offer the world.
Doherty was best known for her role as Brenda Walsh in the 1990s teen series “Beverly Hills 90210” but had several other acting roles to her credit. She starred alongside Winona Ryder in “Heathers” in 1989 and won a leading role in the popular supernatural drama “Charmed” in 1998.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1971, she grew up in the Southern Baptist faith and made her acting debut with TV guest spots at age 11. During her successful acting career, she gained a reputation as a “bad girl” and was known for heavy partying and generating tabloid headlines. She also had a bad reputation as a co-worker and was involved in infamous feuds with several co-stars.
A registered Republican, Doherty once said she realized most celebrities are Democrats and had “no problem with that.” She married three times, and her divorce from her third husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko, was finalized just before her death.
