(ProsperNews.net) – A 6-year-old girl died in a bizarre accident while vacationing in Maine. Lucy Morgan, from Rockaway, New Jersey, was with her family in Limerick when she and her 10-year-old brother decided to end the vacation with a game of badminton. In a tragic freak accident, however, her brother’s racquet broke apart during a swing, sending parts flying through the air and striking Lucy in the head.
The child’s father, Pastor Jesse Morgan of the Green Pond Bible Chapel, said he and his wife Bethany were relaxing and enjoying the final day of their vacation when they heard screaming from the badminton court. The shaft of her brother’s racquet had penetrated the young girl’s skull, and her parents immediately rushed her to the nearest hospital. From there, medics transferred Lucy by helicopter to a facility in Portland, Maine, where she hung on until succumbing to her injuries four days later.
On his church blog, Lucy’s devastated father began documenting the tragedy. He wrote of the comforting messages he and his wife received, often from strangers, and the reaction of Lucy’s siblings to her death, which ranged from confused to saddened to horrified. He noted that his only consolation was knowing his daughter had not suffered.
Pastor Morgan furthermore recounted his feelings when neurologists told him that Lucy would not recover and advised the family to say goodbye. He described this as a “blur.”
Maine State Police formally declared the young girl’s death accidental and unintentional and offered their “deepest condolences to the Morgan family.” The Green Pond Bible Chapel organized a remembrance service for Lucy on June 15, and a GoFundMe account raised almost $100,000 in the days that followed the accident.
The Pastor later blogged that he and his wife discovered a note in Lucy’s rucksack in which she describes God. “God is so amazing and He is the true God and He created everything and He died on the cross for our sins,” she wrote.
