(ProsperNews.net) – Two police officers were shot in Philadelphia during an altercation with a fleeing suspect. The incident started when officers responded to a call about shots fired and got into a vehicle chase with an armed suspect that ended when the suspect rammed his car into the officer’s patrol vehicle in the Frankford Avenue area of the city. Following the smash, the suspect exited his vehicle and began firing at the officers.
One officer was lucky to escape with his life after a bullet grazed his head, the other was wounded in the ankles and nose. Police reinforcements arrived, and the cops shot back and hit the 40-year-old suspect, who was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Interim Philadelphia Police Commissioner John M. Stanford, Jr. tweeted, “Yet again, our brave @PhillyPolice officers have come under fire in service to our city,” and urged people to remember the injured officers in their prayers, as well as their families and colleagues.
Days after the incident, police identified the alleged criminal shooter as Dioul Devaughn, who reportedly has a lengthy criminal history, including for firearms offenses. He now faces charges including attempted murder. Mr. Stanford said Devaughn was known to police, but his past will matter little now that he has shown himself willing to fire at officers.
The police officers involved in the incident are Christopher Rycek, Henry Glenn, Kenneth Fazio, and Michael Mitchell – those who were injured are expected to make a full recovery.
