(ProsperNews.net) – The House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would have illegal immigrants removed from the United States if they attacked a law enforcement officer, despite 148 Democratic officials voting against the immigration reform. The Republican-led House of Representatives passed the bill as part of a group of policies it will push to a vote during National Police Week, and the measure received 265 votes, allowing it to succeed. 148 Democrats attempted to halt the measure, but 54 Democrats voted in favor of the immigration reform, allowing the Republicans a minor victory within the Congressional chamber.
Representative Jeff Van Drew (Republican-New Jersey) introduced the legislation in February and called other elected officials to vote for the bill. According to Van Drew, immigrants who attack law enforcement officers shouldn’t have the privilege of remaining in the United States. Van Drew also claims that if an illegal immigrant attacks a member of law enforcement, they’ve proven they won’t be a good person to have in the United States, and federal authorities should have them deported. The bill also featured new policies regarding the deportation process and how illegal immigrants are admitted into the United States.
The recently passed bill requires federal immigration authorities to detain illegal immigrants who attack police officers and hold them until deportation becomes possible. Additionally, the bill features a new requirement that illegal immigrants who attack members of law enforcement are classified as “inadmissible,” meaning they won’t be allowed into the United States due to their prior assault on a police officer. Despite the bill passing through the House of Representatives with a notable majority, members of the Democratic Party remain skeptical about the measure and accused Van Drew’s police of preventing legal immigration.
Representative and Majority Whip Tom Emmer (Republican-Minnesota) appeared on Fox News to talk about the Democrats who opposed Van Drew’s bill, which he claims proves the Democratic Party holds an anti-law enforcement agenda. According to Emmer, the Democrats who opposed the immigration reform care more about protecting violent immigrants than police officers.
Van Drew’s bill comes as a response to the growing number of assaults on law enforcement officers by illegal immigrants, which has become increasingly common since January.
